Directory submission FAQ for novices

While reading webmaster forums and blogs there are some questions that one can see frequently asked about directories and directory submission, these are some of them:

Will submitting to directories improve my search engine results ?

Yes, one important ranking factor for search engines is the popularity of your web site. Search engines calculate your site’s popularity based on how many pages on the internet are linking to you.

Of course it’s not the only ranking factor and it will take some time for search engines to notice all the links pointing to your web site, but submitting to directories is definitely something you should be doing.

Yes, every link pointing to your site is taken in account by Google when calculating your site’s pagerank, with higher PR links having heavier weight. Submitting to a significant amount of directories will result in more sites linking to you.

How many directories should I submit to?

You should submit to as many as you can. The more links the better, keep in mind though that not every link has the same value: a link from a themed directory that fits the niche of your web site will be very valuable while a listing on a directory completely unrelated to yours won’t bring you nearly any benefit.

Using multiple titles and descriptions

As you may know anchor text in incoming links is a key SEO factor, definitely this is something you should not forget when planning to submit your website to directories.

A good anchor text would be a short phrase containing some of your target keywords, but don’t forget that search engines don’t like all your incoming links to have the same text: if every page linking to yours were to use the same anchor text, it would be seen by search engines as an unnatural pattern.
As directories linking to you will be using as anchor text the title you provide to them at the time of submitting, what you should do is use a set of different titles for your submissions.

You can do this quite easily with Website Directory Submit as it allows you to use an unlimited set of profiles for each of your websites.

When adding new profiles into the software you will notice there’s a field called profile weight, the higher the weight of a profile the higher the chances of it being used to auto fill a form, example: if a given profile has a weight of 30%, it will be used in 30% of your submissions.

That’s how you can automate the distribution of anchor text used by directories to link to your site.
